HOW LONG THE THE BANKRUPTCY PROCESS TAKE? In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the bankruptcy court typically grants the Chapter 7 discharge approximately four months after the initial filing date of the bankruptcy documents. Some cases may take longer. In a Chapter 13 cases, the bankruptcy court generally grants the Chapter 13 discharge as soon as practicable after the debtor completes all payments under the plan. A Chapter 13 plan may provide for payments to be made over three to five years. This article does not discuss Chapter 9 (municipalities), Chapter 11 (reorganization), and 12 (family farmer) bankruptcies.
